Currently Reading
The Unbearable Lightness of Being: A Novel (Perennial Classics)
By Milan Kundera

I finished Kundera!
Let discussion commence!
Anyone else finished or will I spoil people's reading if I start talking about it?
And what is August's book?

"It's nothing to do with us, it's not our fault.  In the heart of every man and every woman a kind of Garden of Eden endures, where there is no war, no death, where wild animals and deer live together in peace. All we have to do is to reclaim that paradise, just close our eyes to everything else. We are a man and a woman. We love each other."

This is beautiful.

"Just imagine the confusion that can be caused in people's minds when they see virtue practiced by people who are not religious."

I thought of this line as my manager was nearly shouting his frustration over fickle church groups who demand cheap rentals and cancel at the last minute-- Christians don't exactly have the high reputation they might have had at the time Nemirovsky was writing this novel. I wonder what confusion might be caused if Christians actually practiced the virtue we're so adamant to preach.

[I'm still finishing Suite Francaise, and I'm sure some of you are in the same boat. However, it would be nice to hear your thoughts before we move on to The Unbearable Lightness of Being.]

Say hello to our selection for the month of June:

I'm sorry I have not been as articulate as a book club dictator should be. We will be following Némirovsky's 'Suite Française' with Kundera's 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being' and Nicole Krauss' 'The History of Love' in July and August respectively. That is, unless there is a collective change of heart.

Embrace the storm in June.

joel.

ps. I'd like to welcome Lauren Thompson as a temporary member for the month of June. Um... welcome!

What Others Are Reading

So...I have an addiction to Raisin Bran and the New York Times.  No surprise there, but I thought everyone might find this article interesting as it lists what some of our favourite authors are reading.  Featured from our booklist: Dave Eggers, Nichole Krauss, Jonathan Safran Foer.

Yay for books!

Jill
